    Creative Industries Zone

New Downtown CIZ Brand Launch and Craftober Fest
    more ▼ less ▲

One of the most exciting things in the City has been building a new downtown. This neighborhood is rising up out of the ground, but it isn’t just coming out of nowhere. It is being built in and around an industrial neighborhood that has long been home to many hidden small businesses that manufacture and craft products that we buy, eat and drink. Even better, many of these businesses are open for you to enjoy them. Welcome to the Creative Industries Zone!

A small, committed group of business owners and friends have been working together to remake this neighborhood while keeping it creative. So while they are behind the scenes making art, building furniture, and brewing beer, they are also out on the streets with the SSL Arts Council making their mark on the neighborhood.

So what’s this funny light bulb with the eyeball all about? It’s about giving our Creative Industries Zone a symbol and making it more recognizable once you’ve there. It’s about giving you a clue that something creative is happening inside those walls. So the next time you come to the Creative Industries Zone for Craftoberfest or Mural Fest or a night out, look for the lightbulb and let it guide your way.

Puncturevine: Let's Get Rid of It!

    more ▼ less ▲

What can be done about noxious weeds, such as puncturevine (goatheads)?

By mid-September, the seeds (goatheads) will have dried out and dropped into every nook and cranny, ready to attack! Goatheads are the spiny seedpods of the puncturevine that have dried out into hard burrs. The seeds can not only germinate all summer long but can be viable for 10 years!

Controlling noxious weeds, such as puncturevine is everyone's responsibility. To prevent seeds from spreading, early action is very important. Be sure to remove the entire plant and roots as well as pick up all seeds left behind (not an easy task). Wear thick gloves and bag up to dispose of. To prevent new plants from growing, they can be controlled with herbicides, weevils (a beetle) or weeding, but once seeded, the only solution is to remove the entire plant and seeds.

Property owners and businesses are required to keep noxious weeds, such as puncturevine under control to prevent their spread and damage. For more info, contact the SSL Department of Neighborhoods at 801-412-3622 or email sdunn@sslc.com.
