    Historic Scott School

    more ▼ less ▲

South Salt Lake’s Historic Scott School

    Background

The Historic Scott School is located at 3271 South 500 East in South Salt Lake.  The school was founded in 1847, when a two-room log cabin was built on the corner of 3300 South and 500 East with the intent to be used as a church, school, and community center.  In 1890, the building was replaced with a larger brick building and named after pioneer, John Scott. Over time, several other structures were added to the site which was owned by the Granite School District and leased by local non-profit, Pioneer Craft House.

In 2007, Granite School District decided to sell its ownership interest in the Historic Scott School.  South Salt Lake expressed interest in purchasing the site with the intent of updating the campus and expanding its offerings to the local community, including use of the property for South Salt Lake’s Promise afterschool arts program.  To facilitate the purchase, the City entered into an interlocal agreement with Salt Lake County in which the County would purchase the property from Granite School District and bond for the purchase using ZAP funds.  The agreement stated that when the bonds were paid off, the County would transfer the deed to South Salt Lake.

    Current status

The bond was paid off in July 2018, but the transfer of ownership to South Salt Lake has taken some time due to the creation of a historic preservation easement on the property.  Salt Lake County has now signed the necessary documents to convey full ownership of the property to South Salt Lake.

    Anticipated changes

South Salt Lake will make any necessary changes – to both the physical buildings and tenant mix -- to ensure that the diverse residents of South Salt Lake receive the highest and best use of the Historic Scott School within the confines of the historic preservation easement.  To that end, the City has initiated eviction proceedings to remove Pioneer Craft House from the property given that Pioneer Craft House does not have a valid lease.

South Salt Lake residents are among the most culturally, ethnically, and religiously diverse in the State. Considering this, we seek to provide programming and cultural opportunities that serve all South Salt Lake residents.  South Salt Lake will expand arts and cultural programming that is affordable and accessible – this will include enhanced Creative Arts for Life programming for seniors and adults and Promise afterschool art programming that better serves the City’s cultural, financial, and legal requirements.
