Additional broadband internet expanding to the “city on the move”.

The City of South Salt Lake has entered into an agreement to bring Google Fiber’s fiber network to the City. Mayor Cherie Wood made the announcement to the City Council during their February 24, 2021, Regular Meeting. The agreement allows Google Fiber to begin building its fiber-to-the-home network in South Salt Lake. Residents and businesses are expected to be able to begin signing up for internet service by this summer.

“Digital equity and inclusion are imperative for resident success. Working with Google Fiber creates new options for broadband access and connectivity in our community,“ said Mayor Wood. “Google Fiber’s expansion into South Salt Lake will assist us in addressing the digital divide.” 

South Salt Lake is a city that values diversity, fosters a sense of belonging, and prioritizes resident success. The City’s Promise SSL initiative provides out-of-school programming with an academic and prevention focus. Some SSL youth and families have insufficient access to the internet that hinders opportunities and their ability to prosper. Google Fiber seeks to provide access and connectivity citywide.

“South Salt Lake and Mayor Wood recognize the opportunity that access to fast, reliable internet can make in a community,” said Jacob Brace, Google Fiber Government and Community Affairs Manager, Utah. “Google Fiber is excited to be part of South Salt Lake’s goals of being a connected and innovative city.” 

“It is often said that we are a small city with big opportunities, I am thrilled about our work with Google Fiber and the many opportunities it will afford residents and businesses,” said Mayor Wood. 

SSL will continue the legacy as a “city on the move” through the Google Fiber agreement that will provide residents and businesses alike with reliable, fast broadband internet. 

Salt Lake County is seeking community feedback on priorities for TRAX & S-Line improvements through their Future of Light Rail Survey. You can find more information at rideuta.com/folr or access the survey directly.

The 2040 General Plan will guide our City's development for the next 20 years! By filling out the second General Plan Survey, those who live, work and play in our City can can help shape South Salt Lake's policies and direction for years to come.

You can also share your ideas and comments related to housing, transportation, economic development, and parks & open space by following the “Engage” link on the website.

Winter is here, and that means plenty of snow is on the way! While our Public Works Department is hard at work keeping the streets clear, there are a few things residents can do to help them out:

• Remove snow from your sidewalks and parking lots
• Keep snow out of the roads when shoveling
• Avoid parking in the streets after a snowfall

Plowing begins after one inch of snow accumulates on the roadways and will continue until it is safe to drive. For more information on our plowing schedule, routes and operations, see our Snow Removal webpage.

The Utah Department of Workforce Services has released a COVID-19 fact sheet, translated into the following languages:

• Spanish
• Burmese
• Swahili
• Arabic
• Farsi
• Somali

500 West; 3300 South to 3900 South

South Salt Lake City in partnership with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), have begun the design for the reconstruction of 500 West between 3300 South and 3900 South. The proposed reconstruction project will enhance the safety along 500 West for all users and will extend the life of the roadway. Design of this project is expected to continue through 2021 and construction is scheduled for Spring/Summer 2022.

The public involvement team is currently accepting comments, requests for copies of the draft environmental document, or requests for a public hearing, through Feb. 5, 2021. Comments and requests for a public hearing can be submitted via the project hotline at 855-663-6800 or by email to adeslis@utah.gov. Comments and requests can also be sent by mail to Amalia Deslis-Andrews C/O Kimley-Horn, 111 E. Broadway Ste 600, Salt Lake City, UT 84111 and will be accepted if postmarked by Feb. 3, 2021.

The Utah State government has announced that starting Monday, January 18 the COVID-19 vaccine will be available for Utahns 70 and older. If you are a school staff member, a healthcare worker or are 70+ years old, you can schedule your vaccination with the SLCo website.
