radKIDS

radKIDS Logo

The South Salt Lake Police Department is proud to be part of the nationally-recognized radKIDS (Resisting Aggression Defensively) family of instructors!

radKIDS is the national leader in children’s safety. radKIDS is brought to youth and parents by nationally-certified instructors drawn from our own community.

The radKIDS Personal Empowerment Safety Education Program is a 10-hour, family-centered, safety education program that emphasizes essential decision-making skills as well as physical resistance options to escape violence. Youth from 5-12 years of age participate with their instructors to create a true safety partnership. Through radKIDS training, youth become empowered and learn to replace the fear, confusion, and panic of dangerous situations with confidence, personal safety skills, and self-esteem.

radKIDS Curriculum

  • Home, school and vehicle safety
  • Out and about safety
  • Realistic defense against abduction
  • Good-bad-uncomfortable touch
  • Stranger tricks (including physical defense against abduction)
  • Self-realization of personal power

“This training was especially good for [my son] because he’s so friendly and outgoing that prior to the training, his initial response would likely have been to try to help a stranger or even a non-stranger, which certainly would have increased the likelihood of him becoming harmed. I also found the household, fire, and traffic safety components of the program extremely helpful. It’s truly far more than a self-defense class. It’s comprehensive safety awareness and response training that, in my opinion, every child should attend. I’m going to tell everyone I know that has children to look for upcoming RadKids training.”

NOVA

The SSLPD implemented the NOVA program into community schools in 2018. The program focuses on principles to increase success and opportunities in life for South Salt Lake's youth. These life skills classes cover self-esteem, bullying, anger management, being true to yourself, drug and alcohol awareness, and resistance to gang involvement. The program is set in an engaging format with a hands-on approach, and incorporates activities and games into the lessons. For additional information on the program, see NOVA Principes.
